Monday Popcorn - Tie-Dye...Not Just for T-Shirts Want to know what I’ve been thinking about all weekend? Only the best decade ever: the '90s baby! I was trying to remember some of the tragic phrases and slang of that time this morning, and a quick google search revealed that I have clearly not even left the '90s, as most of these are still things that come out of my mouth on a daily basis. My personal favorites: “Boo-yah!” “As if!” (Remember Clueless with Alicia Silverstone? CLASSIC.) “My bad.” “Yo Mamma” “NOT”…as in, “I hate your hair. NOT!” And the best word that came from the '90s? ”Duh!” My mind has been in '90s mode all weekend because I got to use some major creative energy on some cupcakes for my sorority, Alpha Omicron Pi (AOII). You see, Bid Day is today, which means it’s time for the collegians to celebrate the arrival of new members, and where there’s celebrating, there’s food. In our case, the girls got really inspired with their theme choice and decided to have a '90s party! Anyway, I can’t tell you the exact phrase the girls have chosen to name the day (top secret sorority stuff of course), but it’s cute and totally '90s. I made cupcakes for them and decided that the quintessential '90s cupcake just HAD to be tie-dye. This brings us to today’s cupcaking tip – How to Make Tie-Dye Cupcakes (I’ve even included pictures. You’re welcome.): 1. Mix together your cake mix ingredients as directed on the box, then separate batter into 3 bowls. Add food coloring to each bowl to reflect the colors you choose. In my case, I did yellow, hot pink, and something like a neon blue (see photo). I chose those colors because they’re all very distinct and easy to separate. If you use, say, green, blue, and purple, you’re probably going to have a little messier look, but still okay. 2. Prepare your cupcake pan with baking cups. Use a cookie dough scoop, and start with whichever color you like. Drop one scoop of batter in each cup (of your first color), then go behind and repeat with second color, then third. Note: it really doesn’t matter what order you start in, once they bake they’ll all mix together anyway. After you get all your colors in, take a toothpick and swirl it in your mixture but DO NOT mix them together. Just swirl it a time or two and you’ll be in good shape. See photo. 3. Bake as directed, and voila - isn’t that cool?Finish them off with icing that coordinates. I used different icing tips with each color just to add texture to the whole look of them. Remember if you’re intimidated by the icing technique, YouTube it! By the way, I’ve done this with camo colors, too, and it looks glorious. Just a thought for those of you anticipating the return of hunting season! There you have it friends, now get to baking! And if you’re a child of the '90s, I dare you to have a throwback day today in your office…say the word “sike” to your coworkers a few times and see how many looks you get. Happy Monday! -Lacey [+] add comment |
